| "To believe and to heal" is the first book by Ignazio Marino, edited by Einaudi and published by Le Vele.
This thought provoking book confronts many of the critical medical issues of our time: the doctor-patient relationship, preoccupation with disease and the promise of a more technological "miracle-making" medicine. In line with these themes, the book reflects on the most pressing ethical issues that regard medical professionals: their mission, empathy for others and the need to believe in the value of the profession. The book reflects on the writer's own personal life experiences, reviewing almost thirty years of work (both in Italy and the US), constructively analyzing the pros and cons two very different health care systems. The author paints a picture of medicine in crisis, specifically in the western world, where doctors are overwhelmed by technology that emphasizes a strict reasoning adapted from economic models, instead of considering the real needs of the patients. In conclusion, there is an appeal to change the course of medicine. |
